Tips from my Airbnb host (October 2025)
"Another tip: don't go out alone too late. The Bellavista area and the Mapocho Riverbank are dangerous at night due to heavy alcohol and drug use. So, if you're going out and returning late and alone, it's best to use an Uber or taxi to stay safe. Don't worry, these are the rules of any big city in the Americas."
"Friday is the best day to visit the Barrio Italia neighborhood, very close by (7 minutes by taxi). It has great places to eat, have beers, enjoy live music, and it's VERY SAFE—not dangerous at all!"
"Bella Vista is just weird, in my opinion too touristy and I would skip it. During the day it safe, during the night it can be sketchy.
Barrio Brasil should be avoided at any time, personally I never go there because it’s not much different from barrio italia or barrio lastarria, maybe a bit cheaper but it doesn’t pay off, it’s crowded with homeless people and muggers.
I will never understand tourists going to vitacura/ las condes. There’s literally nothing to do there. It’s just where wealthier people live. That’s it. Especially vitacura like absolutely nothing to do there, and not even metro stations nearby.
Lastarria and the Bella's Artes neighborhood are more safe and tourist friendly. Manuel Montt can be a cool spot to grab some beers too.
I'd advise you to not go to La Vega and Mercado Central.
Las Condes, Vitacura and Providencia are safe."

"Major Cities (Santiago, Valparaíso, Viña del Mar): These areas require the most caution. Petty crime like pickpocketing is common in crowded tourist areas and on public transport. Certain neighborhoods, such as Bellavista and Lastarria in Santiago, can be less safe at night. It is recommended to stick to well-known, upscale neighborhoods like Providencia, Las Condes, and Vitacura, especially in the evenings."
